Negenennegentig procent van de straatmodemerken is ongeïnspireerd en crappysaai. Hoe vermoeiend is het om een shirt of trui te zien met alweer een verwijzing naar de jaren tachtig of negentig? Ha, daar hebben we het Raiders logo weer. Maar dan met een gevatte knipoog naar het merk dat er de draak mee steekt. Pffff. Gaap.

Dus geef ik toe dat ik die merken wel snap. Ik heb zelf ook een zwak voor dingen uit m'n jeugd. En werd daarom compleet crazy in de bol toen ik die Madballs designs tegenkwam! Veel mooier werd speelgoed in de jaren tachtig namelijk niet. Ik had er een paar waar ik eigenlijk alleen maar naar keek. Want ermee gooien, dat sloeg nergens op.

Deze poppetjes moeten ze echt opnieuw uitbrengen. Oh, dat doen ze ook! Tijdens de ComiCon in San Diego zijn de nieuwe versies van de monsterkoppen getoond. Sweet.

'That's a massive question that we'll be exploring in the DVD series, but the designer vinyl movement was inspired on a lot of levels by Hikaru Iwanaga of Bounty Hunter, who grew up on a steady diet of The Clash, Bad Brains and punk in general.'

'Haha! We're not sure that the term absolutely normal applies, but we'd be happy improve the love lives of collectors everywhere! That would be pretty fantastic.'

Why do a lot of guys collect them? What do you love about them?
'Well, people seem to collect for a lot of different reasons! Fun, aesthetics, obsessiveness, nostalgia and trendiness all come to mind. We collect toys because they are cool.'

'It sounds like a simplification, but, to paraphrase Hikaru Iwanaga from Bounty Hunter, when you first get into toys, it's similar to the first time you hear a genre of music that you'll always love. For him, that music was punk. If the feeling hits you, it's like "WHAAMMM!" There is just an essence to a killer toy; historical and cultural references combine with keen attention to detail, volume, form and color. They have integrity and when you look at them, they are just sort of rule!'

Are there different scenes for people who like true action figures (aimed at kids) and designer toys (aimed at adults)? Is there any animosity? Like you have between skateboarders and inline skaters?
'Hahaha! That may be true, but we don't really follow that type of thing. These days, there are different scenes for anything and everything. Expending energy on that seems sort of misguided to us.'

'We're way more into exploring connections between various subcultures rather than focusing on division. For example, if we're talking about action figures, Eric So from Hong Kong is an amazing artist. He's taken the action figure to unbelievable places, creating reverent, beautifully detailed figures of someone he looks up to as a cultural icon, Bruce Lee. What we find interesting is people creating with this kind of passion and defined viewpoint. That's what inspires, that's what lasts, and that's what we're seeking to explore through toypunks.'

MonoBrow voelt zich als herboren na een Aux Raus optreden. Maar dan wel een geboorte waarbij de moederkoek nog effe met ‘n rotvaart tegen z’n kop aangeslingerd wordt. Wekken jullie altijd zoveel energie op bij het publiek?
'Dat is wel ons streven. Aangezien we een soort karaoke show deluxe geven live, is het wel handig als het publiek een beetje meedoet. anders is het zo saai... dus we proberen de mensen wel altijd een beetje op te jutten om keihard te beuken.'

Hoe anders wordt het nieuwe album?
'Harder, hysterischer, langer, breder, hariger, stinkender, vetter, yes-r, pus, pus, pus, prrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiii, we gaan er gewoon een schepje bovenop gooien.'

Skate klapt harder dan een avondje UFC. Het is dan ook de game waar iedereen met een spelcomputer en een ding voor skateboarden al maanden naar uitkijkt.

'Honestly I don’t think that Plastic Little is understood by the people that listen to Plastic Little. They’re friends of mine and I can’t really say I understand them. Plastic Little does have some pretty misogynistic lyrics that I won’t defend but what separates them from folks like 50 Cent and Mobb Deep is that they know what they are saying is fucked up and ridiculous. They are not trying to advocate any kind of lifestyle and they definitely don’t take what they are saying seriously and don’t expect anyone else too.'

'Undoubtedly some people do have a problem making the transition. '1.) It focuses our eyes on the details of our everyday lives that we often take for granted. 2.) It shows us how micro moments can inform us about macro contexts. 3.) It’s pretty. 4.) You can create a visual representation of pretty much anything you imagine. 5.) There’s new reasons all the time.'

'For me it’s a great break from video and film because you’re just interested in a one particular instant and it reminds you how much you can say visually in a single frame. With moving pictures it’s easy to add lots of stuff that’s unnecessary. Also it’s cool because I can upload dumb pictures of myself to MySpace with my head on other bodies, which never seems to get old to me.'

Could you give MonoBrow readers a sneak peak at something you're working on right now?
'I’ve got a few things in the works right now. I’m just about to finish a music video for Peggy Honeywell (the music project of the super talented artist, Clare Rojas). It was directed by Andrew Jeffrey Wright and I produced and edited it. I’m also starting two new music videos soon. One is for The A-Sides on Vagrant Records and Tender Forever on K-Records.'

'I’m also finishing up a little experimental/documentary/performance piece about falling in love in France and I’m working on a treatment for a longer documentary I’ve been shooting so I can hopefully look for funding at the Rotterdam film market in your fine country in January. Maybe one of your readers can give me a couch to sleep on?'
