'We're lucky to have some crazy toys that collectors may get hyped about, but we also have super cheap toys that we like just as much! For us, it's less about exclusivity as it is about enjoying items we like!'

What's up with the combination Japanese punk and toy culture? How are these things linked?
'That's a massive question that we'll be exploring in the DVD series, but the designer vinyl movement was inspired on a lot of levels by Hikaru Iwanaga of Bounty Hunter, who grew up on a steady diet of The Clash, Bad Brains and punk in general.'

'He mixed his love of punk and American character culture to create a powerful new aesthetic and brand name in Japan. Before that, prolific American punk artist Pushead made toys in Japan that influenced a generation of artists and creators. Also, Takeshi Sakamoto, bass player of the Japanese hardcore band Cocobat, played a pivotal role in the link through his creation of the Fink-shit toy.'

'She proposed marriage!'

Ronald Jenkees heeft niet alleen die achternaam waar je als Nederlander nationalistische gevoelens bij krijgt. Het is ook nog een keer een boy met beats en synth skills waar je potverdikkie van zegt. En uiteraard heeft hij ook die dingen voor al die gevoelige shorties.

Ok. Dit is er eentje voor voor iedereen die wel eens droomt van een beter, leuker, mooier of cooler leven. Blijf dat vooral doen. Maar besef dat je daar ook werk van kunt maken. Neem Catherine O'Flynn.

Zij had niet bepaald een bijzonder leven. Maar besloot op een dag What Was Lost te schrijven. Een verhaal over gemiste kansen, frustraties en fucked up gezinnen. Zelf dacht ze dat het niks zou worden met dat boek. Maar inmiddels is ze genomineerd voor drie onwijs belangrijke literaire prijzen. Inmiddels hebben Justin Kovalsky en Chris Nelsonde, de makers van deze documentaire over de link tussen (designer) toys en de punk- en straatcultuur in Japan, netjes meegewerkt aan een MiniMail. In twee delen. Dus voor de snelle rekenaars onder ons: dat is twee keer genieten!

Will your documentary for once and for all explain to the girl/boyfriends of collectors that it's absolutely normal to like toys as an adult?
'Haha! We're not sure that the term absolutely normal applies, but we'd be happy improve the love lives of collectors everywhere! That would be pretty fantastic.'

Why do a lot of guys collect them? What do you love about them?
'Well, people seem to collect for a lot of different reasons! Fun, aesthetics, obsessiveness, nostalgia and trendiness all come to mind. We collect toys because they are cool.'

'It sounds like a simplification, but, to paraphrase Hikaru Iwanaga from Bounty Hunter, when you first get into toys, it's similar to the first time you hear a genre of music that you'll always love. For him, that music was punk. If the feeling hits you, it's like "WHAAMMM!" There is just an essence to a killer toy; historical and cultural references combine with keen attention to detail, volume, form and color. They have integrity and when you look at them, they are just sort of rule!'

Are there different scenes for people who like true action figures (aimed at kids) and designer toys (aimed at adults)? Is there any animosity? Like you have between skateboarders and inline skaters?
'Hahaha! That may be true, but we don't really follow that type of thing. These days, there are different scenes for anything and everything. Expending energy on that seems sort of misguided to us.'

'We're way more into exploring connections between various subcultures rather than focusing on division. For example, if we're talking about action figures, Eric So from Hong Kong is an amazing artist. He's taken the action figure to unbelievable places, creating reverent, beautifully detailed figures of someone he looks up to as a cultural icon, Bruce Lee. What we find interesting is people creating with this kind of passion and defined viewpoint. That's what inspires, that's what lasts, and that's what we're seeking to explore through toypunks.'

MonoBrow voelt zich als herboren na een Aux Raus optreden. Maar dan wel een geboorte waarbij de moederkoek nog effe met ‘n rotvaart tegen z’n kop aangeslingerd wordt. Wekken jullie altijd zoveel energie op bij het publiek?
'Dat is wel ons streven. Aangezien we een soort karaoke show deluxe geven live, is het wel handig als het publiek een beetje meedoet. anders is het zo saai... dus we proberen de mensen wel altijd een beetje op te jutten om keihard te beuken.'

Hoe anders wordt het nieuwe album?
'Harder, hysterischer, langer, breder, hariger, stinkender, vetter, yes-r, pus, pus, pus, prrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiii, we gaan er gewoon een schepje bovenop gooien.'

Wat zeg je tegen mensen die Aux Raus niet voelen?
'Ik ben mezelf niet of al die jaren nooit geweest.'

Skate klapt harder dan een avondje UFC. Het is dan ook de game waar iedereen met een spelcomputer en een ding voor skateboarden al maanden naar uitkijkt.

MonoBrow speelt de demo non stop. GAAF. Want in tegenstelling tot de Tony Hawk-reeks voelt skate heel realistisch. Gelukkig is het over een paar weken zover. Dan mag je rollen. Keihard rollen. Oh en die gast op het plaatje is volgens mij Chris Haslam, één van de meest originele en technische skateboarders ooit.

De grap die Zomer 2007 heet is bijna voorbij. Wat weer een prima excuus is om een mooie trui te scoren. Die dingen van Mishka bijvoorbeeld. Niet te geleuven wat een gersheid. Online shop Essense is sowieso niet verkeerd qua aanbod. En ze shippen ook naar die Niederlande.

Hip-hop is pretty macho. Do you think Plastic Little is understood by people who listen to 50 Cent and Mobb Deep?
'Honestly I don’t think that Plastic Little is understood by the people that listen to Plastic Little. They’re friends of mine and I can’t really say I understand them. Plastic Little does have some pretty misogynistic lyrics that I won’t defend but what separates them from folks like 50 Cent and Mobb Deep is that they know what they are saying is fucked up and ridiculous. They are not trying to advocate any kind of lifestyle and they definitely don’t take what they are saying seriously and don’t expect anyone else too.'

'Undoubtedly some people do have a problem making the transition. Max Lawrence who runs Free News Projects (Plastic Littles’ label), just sent us this quote the other day from a blog run by two white kids, who I guess usually like the “gatt-tastic” kind of rap, who reviewed Plastic Little and the Dopeness video:

“This shit was so disturbing to my macho heterosexuality that I pretty much dusted off the Screw CDs and listened to nothing but bass heavy gangsta shit for a week, usually with a tall can of Negro Modelo in my lap, riding around just trying to wash the feeling of faggotry out my earlobes."'

'Probably sometime after I stop worrying if I’ll make my rent.'

What's so cool about photography?
'1.) It focuses our eyes on the details of our everyday lives that we often take for granted. 2.) It shows us how micro moments can inform us about macro contexts. 3.) It’s pretty. 4.) You can create a visual representation of pretty much anything you imagine. 5.) There’s new reasons all the time.'

'For me it’s a great break from video and film because you’re just interested in a one particular instant and it reminds you how much you can say visually in a single frame. With moving pictures it’s easy to add lots of stuff that’s unnecessary. Also it’s cool because I can upload dumb pictures of myself to MySpace with my head on other bodies, which never seems to get old to me.'

Could you give MonoBrow readers a sneak peak at something you're working on right now?
'I’ve got a few things in the works right now. I’m just about to finish a music video for Peggy Honeywell (the music project of the super talented artist, Clare Rojas). It was directed by Andrew Jeffrey Wright and I produced and edited it. I’m also starting two new music videos soon. One is for The A-Sides on Vagrant Records and Tender Forever on K-Records.'

'I’m also finishing up a little experimental/documentary/performance piece about falling in love in France and I’m working on a treatment for a longer documentary I’ve been shooting so I can hopefully look for funding at the Rotterdam film market in your fine country in January. Maybe one of your readers can give me a couch to sleep on?'

Donny Miller snapt het. Nadat een relatie compleet mislukte besloot hij dit te verwerken door een zelfhulpboek te maken. Het werd het geniale Beautiful People With Beautiful Feelings. Een dik boek vol pop art-afbeeldingen met die lesjes die je moet leren.

Je kent Donny misschien van z'n ontwerpen voor Vans en Baker skateboards. Maar beter bestel je gewoon dat boek. (Je moet 'm even mailen en dan komt het goed.) En hou je deze site in de gaten, want MonoBrow gaat natuurlijk zo'n MiniMail met de man fixen.

Een tijdje terug heb je de clip van Plastic Little's Dopeness op MonoBrow kunnen zien. Ik was onder de indruk en fixte een MiniMail met Ted Passon, de regisseur. Die man heeft passie voor z'n werk, niet normaal. En blijkt ook nog eens goed met een fotocamera te zijn. Tijd voor het eerste gedeelte van het interview. Morgen meer.

The video for Dopeness looks pretty slick: lots of extras, big set, special effects: expensive to produce?
'Believe it or not the budget was very small. That video was made for a fraction of what it should have cost. When we did actually pay for something we rarely paid full price. Many people worked for free or for a very reduced rate, the location was free, and we pulled in lots of favors.'

That's cool.
'This video was just another example of why I love the creative community in Philadelphia. This wouldn’t have been possible without the generous help of lots of people who are just genuinely excited about making things happen just because they want to see them happen and not worrying about the return.'

What's the best thing about being a director?
'Being at the receiving end of that kind of generosity and excitement – all for an idea you had – is one of the best and most humbling things about being a director. It’s such a good feeling and it really keeps you on your toes cause you think “All these people have given so much of themselves – I better not fuck it up!” It’s a great reminder that groups of people can accomplish big things when they can work together well. Now lets all go make world peace happen!'

Haha. What is it that you have to explain to people again and again about yourself?
'I think the question I get asked most when people meet me in person is “What happened to your eyebrow?”. Half of my left eyebrow is totally white. People usually think I it’s a birthmark or that I was hit by lightening, but it’s just a weird condition where you lose a cluster of pigment in your skin. It popped up on my head one day when I was 13. Most kids my age were getting pubic hair and I got a white eyebrow, but it’s cool. I became a man eventually.'

'What most people don’t know is that the eyebrow is magic. Anyone who kisses me gets a secret dream of their’s granted in the future. People can email me to try it.'

What's your favorite thing to do when you travel by public transport?
'Usually I just read. It’s where I get most of my reading done. Sometimes though I like to look at the other people around me and make up stories about their lives. Some times I daydream about what would happen if there were an accident on the train or plane I am riding and I was somehow stranded with all the people around me and we all have to figure out how to survive together. I try to figure out who would be the leaders, who I’d probably want to hang out with, who I would want to date or have kids with, and what our little “Lord of the Flies” society would look like.'

Vorig weekend werd ik gewekt door de zon die op m'n onderrug (ok, vooruit: ook op m'n kont) scheen. Dat was goed. Gaver was de prachtige vrouw die naast me lag. Bovendien stond de zon een stuk beter op haar goddelijke bilgebeuren dan op die skinny ass van MonoBrow.

Ontwaken zoals je dat niet vaak meemaakt dus. Het enige wat nog ontbrak? Een track van Nina Simone.

Dit is voor iedereen die het geluk heeft elke dag wakker te worden naast een mooi, lief iemand met nog mooiere billen, of denkt dat dit op korte termijn gaat gebeuren. Beter kom je voorbereid:

Vorige week heeft MonoBrow zichzelf niet langer voor de gek gehouden en toegegeven aan die urge. Die knagende drang om geld uit te geven aan mooie maar zinloze dingen. De schade: een nieuwe klok. Uiteraard is het een Casio. Dat is gewoon gaaf. Het is een re-issue van een ouder model:

Nice. En Bull terriërs, die zijn heel goed. Alleen durft MonoBrow nooit zo'n beest te kopen, want daarvoor moet je het overwicht van 'n kampcommandant hebben om 'm te laten merken wie de baas is.

Je kunt nu geen tijdschrift openslaan of je wordt aangestaard door een model in een vies café, met uitgelopen make up en vlekken op d'r designer shirt. Dat realisme in veel (mode)fotografie is vaak prima. Maar het verveelt MonoBrow inmiddels ook.

Gelukkig is er Anne De Vries. Zijn werk is zo fris dat je er zin van krijgt je tanden mee te poetsen. Wat op zich geen goed idee is, aangezien gedrukte foto's bestaan uit papier met 'n laag chemicaliën die geen lekkere uitwerking op je glazuur schijnt te hebben.

Anyway.

Anne maakt dus super geënsceneerde dingen. Volkomen vervreemdend. Echt nice. En vanaf vandaag tot en met 10 oktober te zien in FOAM. Alleen beweert de bron van MonoBrow dat de opening morgen is. Maar ja, dat lijkt dus niet te kloppen. Fucking bummer. Want gratis boozen tijdens openingen, dat is het nieuwe uitgaan in aftandse buurtclubs.
