Wat is voor jou het mooiste moment van een zaak?
"Als mijn cliënt en de tegenpartij na een potje knokken een samenwerking aangaan. Net als boksers die na het gevecht een biertje met elkaar drinken. Hard op de zaak en zacht op de man."

Heb je wel eens een kunstenaar vertegenwoordigd wiens werk je echt te crappy vond?
"Ik ben jurist, wat weet ik nu van kunst..."

Je hebt in 35 landen gewerkt. Ik kan niet eens 35 landen opnoemen. Is er zo weinig concurrentie in jouw vakgebied?
"Als ik 1 cliënt zou hebben die in 35 landen zaken doet, ben ik er al. Ik werk voor een paar jongens die beroemd zijn bij een selecte groep in de wereld. Daardoor kom ik via een paar cliënten in veel landen uit. Volgens mij kent de wereld zo’n 200 landen, dus ik kan nog even door."

Hoe staat het met je geweten: beetje narcistische creatieven helpen terwijl je ook mensenrechtenadvocaat had kunnen zijn.
"Daar maak ik me inderdaad zorgen over. Gelukkig scheid ik mijn afval."

Ik merk dat sommige blogs en sites m'n flauwe taalgrappen overnemen. Heeft het zin om je in te schakelen?
"Als jij denkt dat ze dat waard zijn, bel me."

In je boekwerk geef je 75 tips. Heb je voor MonoBrow-lezers een 76ste conflict-tip?
"Maak alleen ruzie met vrienden. Daar wordt de vriendschap beter van of je komt erachter dat het tijd werd om hem uit je Rolodex te scheuren."

When humour chats up fashion it's in the interest of all of us to drag fashion out of the room, be stern and make sure it never asks about that beguiling humour ever again. But that was before you turned up.
"That is a very nice comment from you thank you very much! I have always used humour in my work and I think as long as the clothes are still wearable and desireable then why not have a bit of fun. The fashion world quite often takes itself too seriously!"

Google auto-filled your name when I typed 'Laura mac...' you're famous! What's the most glamorous thing that happened after your graduation?
"I don’t know if glamorous is the right word but I was interviewed on the BBC news before the show at London Fashion Week, which seems to have really impressed all of my family and just being able to show on schedule at London Fashion Week in itself was pretty amazing, coupled with all the fantastic press attention I have received."

My mother always warned me against girls that spend too much time with the way they dress and look. Are you very self conscious about your look?
"No not really, Me myself I tend to wear the same sort of thing all the time, I used to be much more into my own image when I was younger, even as a child I would drive my mother crazy with outfit changes several times a day."

"But this has diminished as I have gotten older and life’s daily tasks have demanded more time and MA collections have zapped all of my energy."

Is there a specific girl you have in mind when you design your clothes?
"Not really, I always think that this is quite a hard question for a female designer. All the male designers that I know find this a much easier question to answer. I think as a female designer deep down I am kind of designing for a more extreme version of myself."

Here in Amsterdam it's very hard for talented young fashion designers to make a living. How are you going to earn money this year?
"At the moment I am doing a bit of freelance work; I am not looking to set up my own label though so I am actually on the look out for a full time job!"

Have you seen Transformers 2 yet?
"No, I am afraid to say I haven’t even seen Transformers 1 yet."

Do you like robots? Could you design a robot outfit?
"Not really a massive fan, though I do quite like the more retro robot, more Wizard of Oz Tin Man type thing than anything too modern and technical."

Je verdient je geld door videogames te spelen. Hoe awesome is dat?
"Ja dat is leuk. Al komt er tegenwoordig meer bij kijken dan alleen games spelen. Maar goed, je moet nooit vergeten waar je vandaan komt, toch?"

Word je niet gek van je schoonmoeder die vraagt wanneer je nu eindelijk een echte baan zoekt?
"Nee, de baan is okee. Ze zou alleen wel graag willen dat ik niet al die tattoo's had laten zetten. Maar daar ziet ze tegenwoordig ook de grap van in. Dat hoop ik tenminste."

Je bedrijf Blammo bereikt elke maand honderdduizenden mensen. Toch rijd je in een gare monster truck. Wat doe je verkeerd?
"Die gare monster truck was de liefde van mijn leven. Twee jaar geleden zijn we uit elkaar gegaan. Alles wat moois is moet blijkbaar ooit kapot. Maar geloof me. Het was niet de truck. Het lag aan mij."

"Nu rij ik een BMW 325i cabrio uit 1872. Maar goed. Om even op je vraag terug te komen: ik investeer m'n geld liever in plezier. Dat levert, vooral in deze economisch moeilijke tijden, veel meer rendement op. En zodra ik loaded ben, laat ik het je weten."

Je bent klant bij Rob Admiraal, heb je een tattoo van een videogame?
"Natuurlijk niet. Leuk die games maar je moet het niet overdrijven. Overigens ben ik al jaren niet meer door Rob getattoeëerd. Misschien moet ik weer eens langs gaan. Ik zit er aan te denken om mijn driekwart mouwtjes te laten verlengen."

De soundtracks van veel games zijn crap. Generieke gitaren, kansloze trance.... Hoe ziet jouw game song top 5 eruit?
"Er zou wel wat meer aandacht mogen zijn voor het levenslied. De Amsterdamse game studio Guerrilla Games heeft een kans laten liggen door bijvoorbeeld André Hazes of Johnny Jordaan niet te featuren in Killzone 2."

Eh, ja.
"Maar okee, een top 5: De Vlieger (Hazes), op 4: Kleine Jongen (Hazes) , op 3: Heimwee naar Mokum (Gert en Hermien), op 3 Ze loog tegen mij (Drukwerk), op 2: Bloed zweet en tranen (Hazes) en op 1: Babylon Falling van The Twinkle Brothers. gewoon omdat dit interview over 100 jaar misschien nog online is terug te vinden."

Wat zeg je tegen mensen die geld willen verdienen met schrijven over videogames in Nederland?
"Ik denk dat er in Nederland niet meer dan 10 journalisten zijn die kunnen leven van het schrijven over videogames. Dus veel succes! en vooral zorgen dat je ook een vak leert, zodat je tenminste een gezonde relatie met je schoonmoeder kunt opbouwen."

"Dude-balls, I'm a very famous writer. I'll have to assume that you are an illiterate person, otherwise you would know what I've done and what I do. I'm the editor/founder of Wooooo Magazine and I'm an author."

"My most famous book to date is about a gay cat becoming president, it's called President Faggot Cat and Dreamworks are making it into a movie. Carson Kressley will be the voice of the cat, and smouldering Jimmy Schmitts will be played by himself."

This may sound strange coming from someone like me, but why would you like to make money asking questions about the lives of others?
"Because everyone likes to listen in on conversations and thats what Wooooo is. It's like eavesdropping on interesting but basically ridiculous conversations. Who said anything about making money though?"

We get a lot of applicants who only want to work here to get access to cellphone numbers of famous sexy people. Are you after a particular number?
"I am looking for a very, very, very famous sexy number actually, but I can't tell you because you might scoop me, as we say in the biz."

"It's funny how many people ask me who I'm interviewing next, and it's always other magazines and other writers. You must all think I'm a moron! Oh, so who are you interviewing next? And while we're at it give me your credit card and social security number. Nice try, Flaps McGee."

Right. I've just been told that you can be very irreverent and infantile. My p.a. mentioned an incident that supposedly happened a month or so ago. Please elaborate.
"Well that was fucking rude! Why don't I get my p.a. in here to whisper stuff about you in my ear? Jeez! Get some tact! If the incident you're referring to is the Keifer Sutherland/Bahamas thing forget it. I can't talk about it for obvious legal reasons."

Mmmm.
"The only other thing I can think of is the time I was caught combing my pubes with a plastic fork in the map room of the New York State Library. Big deal. Like I'm the only person who's ever done that. Next question."



I also see here that you're known for your candid interviews. Why do you think people open up so easily with you?
"I don't know. I guess I'm just super charming n' shit. Can I go now? Please? Dude-balls?"

Well, I surely will be honest with you: I don't think you're the person we're looking for. Sorry.

Before you leave: have you ever thought about a career switch? Do you have any other qualities?
"No qualities to speak of. I wouldn't even call my writing ability a quality... or an ability for that matter. I truly suck in every conceivable way."

Is all your work hand drawn?
"Yes, all of my work is hand-drawn. I do use the computer for coloring my work."

What does your mother say when you show her your monsters?
"I've been drawing demons and mutants my entire life so at this point my mother isn't surprised by the sorts of things I draw now."

Do you make up stories when drawing?
"That depends on the piece. Currently the Demonology series that I'm working from is inspired by an old occult text known at the Goetia. As far as my other work is concerned, I do imagine the characters as having particular personalities and I put in subtle details that I'd like to think might lead a viewer to see some of the secret things that I see in my work."

Your work reminds me of Jim Phillips and a friend said he thought of Pushead. What's so appealing about drawing freaks and beasts?
"Jim Phillips is obviously a big influence on my work. I've had a lot of people mention Pushead when describing my work. I'm a big fan of Pushead. Like a lot of other artists, I think that what I do is a more refined extension of what I've done since I was a kid."



Which is?
"My childhood and teenage years were spent obsessing over comic books, toys, horror movies, and punk and metal record covers and posters. There's a particular dark current of irreverence and malignant visuals that I've always been drawn to and I imagine that similar artists past and present have found their place in the grotesque. Drawing monsters and freaks is simply more interesting to me than producing typically beautiful art."

Do you ever dream about your creatures?
"My dreams are a very fertile source of inspiration for a lot of my visuals. I draw a lot from my subconscious when I'm sketching."

Brrr. Do you like to draw other stuff too?
"I don't draw much else besides freaks and monsters but in my sketchbooks I do a lot of simple classic cartooning and spend a lot of time creating characters."

What are you working on now?
"I'm making monsters and gore for horror films. I'm also in the early stages of producing a few different toy lines for a new toy company called Playge, making strange stuffed animals and action figures that are in line with my aesthetic- disgusting vile stuff hopefully."

"As well, I'm producing shirt designs for a great company in LA called Lore Clothing, continuing to do work for Transworld Skateboarding and a few other publications, skateboard art for Heroin skateboards, artwork for my own apparel company Dead Druid, and a few other projects including writing and making the art for a role-playing game that I've been working on for 10 years."

What scares you the most?
"Large bugs."

"I grew up being in bands, like a typical, southern-Californian, punk rock teenager. All the bands and all the music I was listening to really shaped the emotions I was having; shaped my self identity on a really deep, mysterious level. I think I've always been interested in how pop culture, art, bands, or something like skate culture, shape your innermost feelings about yourself, your innermost identity. And I've always been interested in how media affect the really mysterious inner life of a person."

Did you read a book during your flight to Amsterdam?
"I caught up on back issues of The New Yorker, my main culture connection. Bedside reading these days is art critic Peter Schjeldahl’s “Let’s See”, a collection of writings on art from the New Yorker."

Are you an avid online reader? Or is it just print for you?
"I follow the Wooster Collective blog. It’s like a daily tonic: it keeps me energized and connected to what’s going on in street art - especially internationally."

You once said that you like it when paintings have a certain ambivalent quality which makes them live a bit longer in your brain when you see them in a museum. Is that a condition for you to consider something as art?
"Not at all. For me art can be many things and found many places. As a painter I paint the type of paintings I’d want to see. Duration is one of those ineffable miracles about old master paintings that I’d like to manifest in my own stuff."

There's a lot of incomprehension between scenes: platforms like Juxtapoz look down upon highbrow art and the traditional art scene doesn't know what to make of people who create Spongebob paintings. Bit tiresome isn't it?
"Not really for me. I keep a heavy filter on what aesthetic battles I get involved in. The type of work I make takes a tremendous amount of energy and focus; anything that supports it makes it through the filter, anything distracting gets rejected. It’s kind of brutal and I’m sure I’m missing out on a lot, but that’s the way it’s got to be."

Sounds good
"As far as the aesthetic turf wars, I’ve cycled through enough art trends by now to understand that everything’s always changing and that this current bubble the urban artists are enjoying will soon be over. Being in fashion, by definition, means it will go out of fashion."

I've been told that current New York doesn't compare to the period you first lived there. Too clean and gentrified. But what's still good about it?
"Utter despair and hopelessness for the human condition isn’t staring you in the face everday like it used to be. To survive here you don’t need to have such a hard shell as back then."

"And generally the hipsters seem healthier and less angry than when I was a kid. Granted, the rage and chaos was artistically productive, but in the end that kind of world is a bad dog—it will bite you if you get too close—and I don’t really miss it."

What's your latest NYC discovery?
"I've lived here for the last 30 years and it’s only recently I became interested in the waterways surrounding us. Lately I’ve been out exploring (on an old wooden boat I’ve been restoring) and it’s amazing how many strange and forgotten things I’ve seen from the water."

When are you truly happy and at peace?
"Never. My life is a constant emergency."

With the Broken Heart Crew you give classic pop culture characters an extra human dimension. What fictional hero do you think has the most difficulties leading his life?
'That's tough, there's so many. I'm a big Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton fan, and certainly all the characters they played seemed to go through life on a steep incline in search of what I think is the simplest and noblest pursuit - love."

Don't we all
"As far as my Broken Heart Crew is concerned, I think Gonzo's got it the worst. He's had some of the saddest moments of any Muppet. Have you ever heard him sing The Wishing Song? Devastating. That guy's had his nose pulled, his body broken, and been rejected so many times that he's been reduced to dating a porky chicken."

Would you like to do animation?
"I don't think I could ever do animation, I lack the discipline and patience to draw the same thing over and over with any kind of consistency."

Is there an animated series at the moment that you consider worth watching?
"I don't have too much time to watch tv or follow any animated series. Most of the animated stuff on tv isn't anything that inspires me artistically, it's just entertainment. Film is where it's at for me. WALL-E blew me away, artistically and emotionally. It was like an animated Chaplin film with robots."



I still have to see that one
"I'm consistently drawn to the older Disney films that Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston worked on, like The Jungle Book and Robin Hood. I'd say the movie that's inspired me the most artistically though is The Triplets of Belleville."

Big entertainment companies can be very fanatical upholding their copyright. Have you ever been bothered by them?
"Thankfully, no. I think I'm much too small a blip on the radar right now. I haven't sold anything or done any shows. You'd really have to be working overtime for an entertainment company to stumble across a pimple like me."

You've made some artwork for the Street Fighter IV launch event in Amsterdam. But can you play that game?
"I haven't played Street Fighter in years. I think I was kind of a cheap fighter - I'd just stretch out and punch people with Dhalsim or shock people with Blanka."

"The only guy I could control with any sort of skill was Guile. I went with him because he was from America and didn't look as wussy as Ken. I never got very good at fighting games though, too many buttons to worry about and combinations for me to memorize. I'm a little slow on the uptake. Like Ferdinand the bull."

How did you get in contact with the Kitsuné Noir Wallpaper project?
"I lucked out there - Kitsune Noir is run about ten feet away from me. If I've got something cool I only need run next door and ask my roommate to show it off."

Did you get new assignments from that exposure?
"Surprisingly, yes. I was published for the first time as a result of it, by the artist UPSO and his magazine, Faesthetic. That magazine was followed up by a pullout centerfold in the Dutch student magazine, Algemeen Nijmeegs Studentenblad, out of Amsterdam. I feel very honored to be a part of anything I've done and continue to do. It's been a great year so far."



What's it like living in LA?
"I've been in LA for almost six years now. I'd say the first five were miserable, and I was inspired if only to succeed in spite of it. I've finally calmed down, accepted it and all of it's faults and quirks and excitement for the time being. I'm planning on doing an interesting series down the road that incorporates the history of the city and my own twisted sense of humor."

What's up next for you?
"I have three pieces left to do in my BHC series, and they're going to get progressively darker. My goal is to finish those and book my first show to present them by this summer. After that I need to switch it up, take a break from the watercolors."

Then what?
"I've got a number of ideas, but I'm gravitating towards one that incorporates famous celebrities from the golden age of Hollywood and tattoos. It should be very cool, I'm excited to jump into something new."

‘Yes, I have become more soft. Let me share my theory about softness: All are born soft. When you grow up, you become curious and start asking questions. The more questions you ask, the tougher you become. Youth is for practice, experiment, input. Creating as much chaos as you can handle. This I did and the softness got going. Now, having seen the seasons change fourty times, I feel it is time for output, time to consolidate. I even find myself using the word 'harmony' now and then.’

‘But it's all good, the wide vision of the angry (careless) young man has transformed into a smooth sailing (still careless) artist with a zen-like focus... No, haha. Just kidding! But my point is, that although the creative process will always be a struggle, I now grasp the idea that it isn't only me and my silly brain that's doing the creating. There are many unnamable things that influence the process. Some call this intuition, or worse, oneness. I know what you're thinking... He's not gone soft, he's gone completely bonkers!’

‘Well, check this out: (off the record) When I work on a calligraphic piece -like the Rich graphic- there's this continuous question: how do I so swiftly decide which curves are good and which need tweaking? This then triggers the notion that my goal is to uncover the secret of life. But I guess that is what every artist aims to do, right? No? It's just me? Whatever. Soft is good. Hey, I haven't been in jail for over ten years. But that's not counting DUI arrests... A shoe will never be a sandal... Understand?!’

So what do you enjoy most: assignments or autonomous work?
‘Good question. Again. They are practically the same. The only difference is that one type of job has a client called 'them' where the other type of job's client is 'me'. There is no essential difference between a window-down whole-tram by L'Oréal and one by Shoe. Multinationals think and operate in the exact same, primitive way that a fifteen year old angry (careless) young man does.'

'An organization of 100.00 people has the same structure as a person. You know; board of directors on the top floor telling the others what to do, etc. But I don't see any CEO that realizes he really doesn't decide shit and subsequently transforms into a smooth sailing (still careless) artist with a zen-like focus... Whatever, I created a situation for myself where my work either fits a campaign for 'them' or 'me'.’

How important is recognition for you?
‘Recognize me, respect me, love me, never forget me and say my name. Especially after I'm dead.’

What do you think of graphic design in Dutch advertising?
‘Read the weekly columns in Adformatie by Dolf Hell. Those should be published in deluxe format. Otherwise I'm just happy that the Futura Extra Bold Condensed is back.’

What’s the main reason for you to get up every day and do the things you do?
‘Now, that is a terrible question.’

What can we expect from you next?
‘Unexpect the expected.’

Over een paar weken staat LadyHawke in de Melkweg. Nu zou 2008 haar jaar worden, maar behalve Paris Is Burning kan ik geen andere nummers uit m'n hoofd opnoemen die net zo tof zijn.

Dat ligt misschien aan de kwaliteit van bepaalde hersenonderdelen (het heeft achttien jaar geduurd voordat ik de verjaardag van m'n moeder kon onthouden), maar toch. LadyHawke is geen Santogold qua impact.

'Haha dat heb ik nog nooit gehoord en ik betwijfel dat iemand dat ooit gezegd heeft. Maar leuk. Bedankt voor het compliment, al ben ik het er totaal niet mee eens.'

Welke merken doen het op dit moment heel goed bij Freshcotton?
'Obey, Vans, nieuwkomer The Hundreds en ons eigen Freshcotton-label is nog altijd erg populair. Naast de 'echte' kledingmerken verkopen t-shirts van hip hop platenlabel Topnotch heel erg goed. En de spullen van Noah's Ark, het label van rapper Jiggy Djé, gaan de afgelopen tijd ook als warme broodjes.'

Is dat ook jouw smaak?
'Obey en Vans vind ik zeker heel erg vet, met een hip hop shirt zul je mij wat minder snel zien. Ik veroordeel het verder niet, mijn muzieksmaak is gewoon wat anders. Ik ben qua merken verder erg fan van Fuct en Freshjive, zij zoeken met hun prints al de grens op en zijn erg provocerend waar ik heel erg van hou.'

'Daarnaast vind ik Mishka heel tof, omdat zij vanaf het begin in tegenstelling tot bijna alle andere streetwear merken met hun prints meer in de rock en horror hoek zitten. Ik hou van een meer rustige stijl, bijna al mijn T-shirts zijn zwart of wit. Ik neig meer naar de 'sophisticated' kant van streetwear, waar het meer om de afwerking van de kleding gaat dan om de print.'

'Ik draag veel overhemden en hou bijvoorbeeld ook van een mooie lange trenchcoat. Ik ben dan ook blij te zien dat dit soort items steeds beter begint te verkopen bij ons op de site. Dit is waarschijnlijk een antwoord op de gekke periode die we gelukkig achter de rug hebben, met all-over prints, neon kleuren en nike air max met zoveel mogelijk kleuren.'

Wat is het meest bizarre aan je werk?
'Dat ik dit soort rare interviews krijg. Haha nee ik denk dat ik het bizarste vind dat ik herkend word, met uitgaan ofzo. Alleen maar omdat ik zo vaak met mijn bolle kop op de site sta. Verder misschien dat ik zo belachelijk veel kleding heb en dan vooral T-shirts.'

Krijg je wel eens kleding teruggestuurd van klanten die gedragen is, met zweet en andere ondefiniëerbare vlekken?
'Ja. Dingen die naar rook, zweet of parfum stinken. Ook wel eens dat er zo'n bepaalde lichaamsgeur van iemand in zit, ken je dat?'

Daar heb ik adresjes voor op eBay
'Dat is niet echt fris als er geen persoon bij komt zeg maar. Ook dingen die naar wasmiddel ruiken en waarvan de print is vervaagd en dat de klant dan bij hoog en laag beweert dat het niet gewassen is. Ik heb wel eens medelijden met de jongens van Logistiek (LBC!).'

Word je er niet gek van dat je de hele dag met mode bezig bent?
'Soms wel ja, vooral als je op een beurs bent in Barcelona ofzo (dat is dan ook meteen de ergste). Ik ben ook niet iemand die er de hele dag over kan praten. En het is niet zo dat ik altijd tot in de puntjes nadenk over wat ik aantrek.'

Shocking!
'Ik kan me ergeren aan mensen die constant hun t-shirt met hun sneakers matchen. Af en toe maakt het me 's ochtends geen reet uit wat ik aantrek, maar ik moet ook eerlijk zijn: als er dan onverwachts een afspraak langskomt, dan baal ik.'

Wat is je grootste online kleding miskoop?
'Ik heb niet echt miskopen gedaan. Ik bestelde vroeger veel schoenen op eBay, dat ging nooit fout. Ik heb wel een keer samen met een ex-collega New Balance besteld als verrassing voor het afscheid van onze manager. Hij vond ze fucking lelijk, haha. You're welcome.'

Welk NL merk gaat in 2009 groot worden?
'The Comp.! Omdat het mijn eigen merk is natuurlijk. Haha. Ik vind de nieuwe collectie van Ontour die begin 2009 in de winkels komt heel erg vet. Verder is manonthemoon ook gruwelijk, maar die zal nooit 'groot' gaan worden omdat de designer altijd voor de massa uitloopt en daarom is het niet commercieel genoeg. Tja, en naast Rockwell hebben we niet zo veel soeps, wel?'

MonoBrow weet het zeker. Isabella Rozendaal is een huisdierenfluisteraar. Reken maar dat de fotograaf eerst poeslief met bakjes Sheba en Bonzo in de weer is. Die arme beesten een beetje gek maken, net zolang totdat het kwijl ze uit de bek loopt en ze alles doen om die snack te bemachtigen.

Jop van Bennekom & Gert Jonkers zijn relevanter dan in Edam gespotte hoge taille broeken. Je kent ze van RE-Magazine, Butt, de BLVD toen dat nog tof was, en Fantastic Man Magazine. MonoBrow is erg onder de indruk. Maar laat dat natuurlijk niet blijken in deze MiniMail met Gert.

Stel, ik klop bij je aan met een redactionele formule voor de Tiett, zeg maar de Butt voor hetero's. Ga je hard lachen of word je dan juist verdrietig omdat ik daarmee laat zien dat ik er werkelijk niks van snap?
'Nee hoor, niet huilen. Ik denk dat het idee voor BUTT, namelijk een welhaast antropologische interesse in andere mensen en hun gedrag, voorkomen en opvattingen, op allerlei mensen los te laten is. Dus ook op hetero's, Japanse postbodes, Saab-bestuurders of tieners.'

Gelukkig
'De naam TIETT vind ik overigens niet meteen erg goed klinken.'

Juist. Koop je wel eens kleren online?
'Niet vaak. Ik heb een paar dingen via eBay of Marktplaats gekocht maar het viel altijd tegen. Toch de maat niet goed, bijvoorbeeld. 1x bij Yoox gekocht, dat was ook niks. Bij kleding gaat het toch in hoge mate om het materiaal, de exacte kleur, en dus ook de maat. Ik koop daarom liever in het echt.'

Ooit een roman gelezen waarin kleding een belangrijke rol speelt?
'Zeker. Gerard Reve had het altijd zeer bevlogen en inspirerend over kleren.'

Heb je zelf de ambitie om een boek te schrijven?
'Nee. Geen tijd, korte concentratie.'

Volg je straatmodemerken een beetje? Ken je je Vans van je Visvim?
'Ja ik ken Vans en Visvim. Hooguit heb ik uit beroepsdeformatie de neiging om meteen aan verbintenissen met ontwerpers te denken. Vans met Marc Jacobs. Visvim met Kim Jones, omdat hij de eerste was die me op Visvim wees.'

In Amsterdam wordt vaak negatief gedaan over de kwaliteit van de mode scene. Ik betrapte jou er op in je Amsterdam Weekly interview.
'Ik vind Amsterdam geen ontzettend inspirerende stijlstad omdat ik er woon. Ik geloof best dat Amsterdam een specifieke eigen stijl heeft, maar het is lastig om verbaasd te worden in een omgeving die je elke dag ziet. Er zijn natuurlijk een paar uitzonderingen; mensen die er vaak geweldig uitzien. Dat gezegd hebbende vind ik niet dat Amsterdam aanzet tot extravagantie.'

Best jammer
'Hoe vaak het me gebeurt om zin in een pak en stropdas te hebben en dan die dag tien keer de vraag heb je iets officieels vandaag? te moeten beantwoorden...'

Wat is het toch waardoor jij en Jop zo goed samenwerken?
'Goeie vraag, maar niet makkelijk te beantwoorden. Chemie?'

Is je druk maken om de kleren die je draagt niet onwijs zinloos?
'Als je het grotere plaatje bekijkt en nadenkt over waar we ons beter druk over zouden moeten maken, zou het antwoord ja moeten zijn. Maar aan de andere kant leven wij in een maatschappij waarin je al behoorlijk gek wordt als je batterij van je telefoon leeg is en je geen oplader bij je hebt.'

Haha.
'Kleding kan mensen echt gelukkig maken of in ieder geval vrolijk en bepaalt voor een groot gedeelte de identiteit van een persoon. Het effect dat kleding op jezelf en op anderen kan hebben is groot.'

Welke kant gaat het de komende twaalf maanden op, fashion wise?
'Wij zijn niet erg met trends enzo bezig en ontwerpen voornamelijk gewoon wat we zelf vet vinden. Maar natuurlijk word je altijd beïnvloed door de dingen die je om je heen ziet.'

Wat dan?
'Er komen veel vernieuwende dingen uit Japan en Scandinavïe momenteel, waarbij de details en afwerking de kledingstukken echt maken. Ook Ontour zal een stuk volwassener worden de komende collecties, met meer uitgewerkte stukken. Dus naast onze tees met bold prints ook veel items zonder prints, waarbij juist het design van het item zelf het speciaal maakt.'

Hoe erg haat je de eighties en nineties?
'Daar ben ik in opgegroeid, goede jeugd gehad man. Dus ik kijk er met veel liefde op terug. Veel Amerikaanse invloeden die op mijn netvlies poppen als ik eraan terug denk. Maar de kleding stylo van die tijd kan me gestolen worden, behalve dan de baseball jackies en cappies waarmee mijn kamer volhing.'

Hoe was Bread & Butter?
'We hadden dit keer geen eigen stand. Maar was ik er voor meetings met
distributeurs, producenten en klanten. En daarnaast natuurlijk om iedereen uit de scene weer te ontmoeten en flink te party'en. Samen met de boys van Frisco, Re-Issue en Freshcotton hadden we een klein feestje georganiseerd.'

Nog tips van opkomende merken die MonoBrow'ers in de gaten moeten houden?
'Ik heb twee gasten ontmoet die de moeite waard zijn: Suburban Bliss uit London en YeahBoy uit Hamburg. Beide supercoole gasten met fuckin veel talent.'

Heel tof
'Niet meer echt opkomend maar wel vet is Tonite van Fergadelic, VNGRD, PAM, Vibskov en Woodwoodje. Daarnaast onze Europese vrienden van Sixpack, Wemoto, Second Son, Man on the Moon, The Comp en nog een berg anderen. Hoppa.'

Ontour gaat harder dan flitspalen. Logisch. Want die boykes hebben een plan. Neem alleen al die nieuwe collectie, een samenwerking met de altijd gezellige Cosmic Crack.

Ook leuk dat ze een plekje op één of ander fashion siteje hebben, maar nu wordt het echt menens: MiniMail met Ontour's Remco op MonoBrow. H.O.P.P.A.

Wat is dat toch met Nederlandse merken en figuren uit de scene die het goed doen in het buitenland?
'Kweenie man, op zich vind ik dit allemaal wel meevallen. Natuurlijk heb je een aantal mensen die al lang bezig zijn en internationaal met hun kunst of noem het streetart faam hebben gemaakt, zoals Delta. Daarnaast heb je natuurlijk Parra die de nieuwe Vincent van Gogh aan het worden is qua bekendheid voor Nederland in het wereldje.'

Haha.
'En een aantal shops die inmiddels wereldwijd aanzien hebben omdat ze gewoon vette dingen doen, zoals een Patta ofzo. Hoeveel gasten ik op Bread and Butter met hun logo tee heb rond zien sjouwen is echt bizar.'

Netjes.
'Maar terug naar het punt: als je het over independent Nederlandse merken hebt die het al enkele collecties goed doen in het buitenland, ipv een paar tees verkopen net over de grens, valt dat toch wel vies tegen. De scene is juist erg klein en de meeste mensen kennen mekaar wel en supporten elkaar, maar 2 of 4 keer per jaar met een complete lijn komen die wereldwijd opgepikt wordt, is een ander verhaal.'

Ontour gaat dat gewoon even doen.
'De potentie is er wel. Maar dat is ook hard werken, heel hard. Daarnaast moet je genoeg onderscheidend en niet een copy van iets zijn wat in elk land te vinden is. Wat dat betreft is Nederland wel een land waar men in staat is om ook echt creatief te innoveren. We zijn vaak tegendraads, nuchter, humoristisch en iconisch.'

Zoals?
'De Stijl, DroogDesign, Kesselskramer, Experimental Jetset, Rem Koolhaas, Viktor en Rolf, Parra... Allemaal totaal andere disciplines en werk, maar toch kun je zeggen: typisch Hollands.'

Wat gebeurt er met je darmstelsel wanneer ik de woorden 'street' en 'fashion' opschrijf?
'Op zich helemaal niks. Vaak zijn het de mensen die woorden als 'streetfashion' of 'streetcouture' of 'hautecouturestreetwearfashion' verzonnen hebben degenen die zeggen dat ze het niet meer kunnen horen. Verzin het dan niet!'

Jullie profiteren wel van de populariteit van die term toch?
'In ons geval is er nooit sprake geweest van meeliften op een hype of een label starten omdat we dan op de gastenlijst van parties komen te staan. Etienne
en ik hebben vanaf het moment dat we vrienden werden op de academie een noodzaak gevoeld om samen iets op te zetten.'

Waarom?
'We deelden dezelfde interesses in bepaalde kunststromingen, grafische ontwerpers, muziek, mode, architectuur, magazines en straatcultuur in het algemeen. Het was al snel duidelijk dat die creatieve uitlaatklep er zou komen waarin we onze eigen beelden neer konden zetten. Dat gebeurde dus in de vorm van Ontour.'

'I am selling a shirt I designed in some local shops in Philadelphia as well as on my Flickr. Other than making shirts with wizards fighting on them, I tend to spend the rest of my time getting into adolescent shenanigans.'

Are your parents supportive or do they consider you a sick little monkey?
'They are supportive of my art, which I think is irresponsible of them.'

What's the freakiest superhero fantasy you've ever had?
'You're crazy if you think I am going to admit that.'

Which movie has given you the most quotes to be used in tricky situations?
'Dolemite. Quoting Dolemite has gotten me out of more scrapes than I care to remember.'

'The link to the translated drawings didn't work, but maybe my inability to understand these comics will finally give me the incentive I need to learn Dutch. or at least get a Dutch friend and use him to read me comics.'

Why do you think you draw the things you draw?
'Drawing is the best way I can display my thoughts. A lot of things I find funny I can't explain as a traditional joke. Drawing is the best way I can exhibit my ideas and humor to other people and have them understand it.'

'That is the problem with this interview. I had to write it so it is all going to sound stupid. If you had me draw an interview though I would have sounded kickass and totally smart.'

'Do you mean what makes me angry? Or what gets me excited? I am excited by good food. I think food is the most important thing. Then sex.'

'Holiday.'

Which Presets lyric do people always sing along wrongly?
'All the words for `I Go Hard, I Go Home' off our first record. The words are all chopped up, so it's difficult for the audience to work out what the lyrics are.'

What are your thoughts concerning the concept of the Power Ballad? Could you write one?
'Power Ballads are great! I love them. Yes, I have written a few (with other bands though). I would love it if one day The Presets did one.'

Do you ever feel lonely on stage? Or is it all adrenaline and sex?
'I never get lonely on stage! I have Kim right next to me.'

In which situation will a Presets song save lives?
'An ambulance driver, when he needs to get somewhere quickly, should be listening to The Presets.'

Any kind words for your parents?
'They are the best. They are my parents. I love them.'

Een tijdje terug was Shintaro Kago in Amsterdam voor de opening van z'n eerste Europese expositie. Ik fixte een MiniMail met een paar nu al klassieke vragen. Helaas dacht de mangaman daar anders over. Of z'n vertaler had er geen zin in:

'If its unrealistic, impractical or fantastic, I never get bored. But if its normal or real, boring.'

What if you could never have sex again in real life and only make drawings about it. Would you mind?
'Maybe my imagination get more richly and unique. Because I can concentrate to just making drawings.'

De kans is vrij groot dat je wel eens om een van z'n grappen gelachen hebt. Tijs is dan ook een scenarioschrijver die het vooral in de haha-hoek zoekt. Lees maar.

Wat gebeurt er met je haargrens wanneer je een negatieve recensie over je werk leest?
'Niet zo heel veel, mijn haargrens gaat vanzelf al gestaag naar achteren.'

Lach je vaak om je eigen grappen?
' Ik lach altijd het hardst om mijn eigen grappen, dan weet ik meteen dat ze misschien niet helemaal geschikt zijn. De laatste keer 'professioneel' was in een bespreking over de bioscoopbon. Ik vond een filmpje met heel veel afgezogen lichaamsvet en een hand die daar dan uitkomt erg grappig. De rest niet.'

Zou je het ook redden in het buitenland?
'Ik hoop het. Ik ga het binnenkort proberen, want ik heb een Tweede Wereldoorlog comedy liggen waar wel interesse voor is vanuit Duitsland.'

Hoe vaak stop je privégrappen in je scripts die alleen leuk zijn voor je vrienden?
'Nooit. Ik schrijf voor een groot publiek.'

Je bent een onwijs aardige vent. Maar zit er ook een donker script in je waar Bret Easton Ellis zelfs klamme handjes van zou krijgen?
'Dat betwijfel ik. Ik schrijf voornamelijk licht drama en komedie. De donkere dingen gaan me niet zo goed af en ik ben er niet zo in geïnteresseerd. Maar misschien komt dat nog.'

Je werkt thuis. Hoe lukt het je deadlines te halen en dus niet om de twee zinnen afgeleid te worden door zakken honingdrop en bizarre internet toestanden?
'Ik heb gelukkig een kantoortje achter de puzzelwinkel van mijn vader dus de afleiding komt voornamelijk van bejaarde buren die koffie komen drinken. Nu is het trouwens even op een dieptepunt want midden in hun verhuizing zijn mijn ouders in mijn kantoor komen wonen. De deadlines kunnen nu dus alleen gehaald worden met de deur op slot en de muziek keihard aan.'

Waar ben je nu mee bezig?
'Ik ben nog de laatste herschrijvingen aan het doen voor Spion van Oranje, een grote absurde spionagekomedie die in mei opgenomen gaat worden. Verder ben ik bezig met wat Shouf Shouf de serie scripts en ben ik wat nieuwe projecten aan het opzetten. Maar na de intensieve herschrijvingen van de Spion van Oranje ook vooral relaxen.'
